Northwest Arkansas Authorities To Increase Seat Belt Enforcement

Area law enforcement agencies will join a two-week enforcement effort designed to increase seat belt use, according to a news release.

The campaign begins Monday and continues through March 31.

The goal of Click It or Ticket is to get everyone buckled up, especially teen drivers and their passengers. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens. In 2012, 73 percent of young people ages 16-20 who died in traffic crashes in Arkansas weren't buckled up.

National seat belt use stands at 84 percent, but Arkansas' rate is only 77 percent, according to the news release.

Arkansas law requires:

• Seat belt use for drivers and front seat passengers.

• That everyone be buckled up if a driver has a learner's or intermediate license.

• That all children younger than 15 be properly restrained.

• That children younger than 6 and who weigh less than 60 pounds be properly restrained in approved child safety seats.
