The War Eagles battled the defending Class 7A state champions on even terms, despite having to play a man down much of the second half in the season opener on the road Wednesday night.

Heritage coach Franklin Jennings said his team played better in the second half against the Grizzlies, after a slow start.

"It was definitely an evenly played match," Jennings said. "We both had five or six shots on goal. I think they got the better of us in the first half, but we got the better of them in the second half. It took us a while to settle in."

Senior Frederico Allprandi earned a red card and was sent off about 10 minutes into the second half, forcing the War Eagles to play a man down. Senior goalkeepr Hugo Flores earned the shutout for Heritage.

Heritage plays at Broken Arrow, Okla., at 3:30 p.m. today.

Girls Soccer

Springdale High 1, Rogers Heritage 0

Jesse Cortez scored with 14 minutes, 50 seconds left in the second half to account for the only goal to give the Lady Red Bulldogs the season-opening win on Thursday night.

"It was almost the same as last week in the our benefit match with Southside, which we won 1-0, Jesse had to goal and Amanda Martinez had the assist," Springdale coach David McKellip said. "Our defense really stepped up. Senior Blanca Barroso anchored our defense, but they all played well."

Sophomore goalkeeper Tegan Hendrix also had six saves for Springdale.

Heritage coach Craig Frank said his team had several scoring chances, but struggled with timing in the season opener for the Lady War Eagles, too.

"We had our basketball girls for our first game, but no practice," Frank said. "The snow days are really disrupting our timing."

Springdale varsity girls and boys host Cabot beginning at 4:30 p.m. today.
