Tontitown Council Approves Contract to Bring Fire Department into City

The Tontitown Area Fire Department will become part of the city in two years, if the fire board approves the contract passed by the City Council Tuesday.

The council approved by a 4-2 vote a service contract with the fire department that includes the change. The fire department has been separate from the city since it was created in the 1970s but the council has paid the department to provide fire protection to the city for many years.

"The city needs to take on the responsibility for fire protection and not farm it out," said Jack Beckford, mayor. "This is where we should have been when the fire department started paying firemen."

The fire department has some paid firefighters but still depends on volunteers to help with emergencies.
