Rash of Fayetteville Thefts Reported After Storm

— The weekend's winter weather quieted the town's crime for a while, but police records show reports of thefts and assaults came roaring back Sunday night through Monday.

All occurred within roughly one mile of the University of Arkansas campus, though for the most part they appear unrelated.

"It comes like that sometimes," said Cpl. Dan Montgomery, referring to the resurgence as snow and sleet tapered.

First, a man was mugged Sunday night on North West Avenue near the downtown square. Two men shoved him down, grabbed his wallet and took a debit card and $200 cash, according to the records.

Monday night brought two more incidents.

A caller at 315 S. Block Ave. reported her neighbors were drunk and trying to force their way through her doors and windows. They'd left by the end of the call, according to call records. Montgomery said no report was filed.

Less than half an hour later, a caller at the Days Inn Fayetteville near Interstate 540 and West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard said his prescription medication, phone and wallet were taken at gunpoint. A woman he once dated and another man robbed him and another woman after he let them in, according to police records.

Montgomery said the incident likely wasn't a drug deal gone bad. Hotel management declined to comment.

Residents also were struck by several copper and wallet thefts. Copper wire was reported stolen at 1781 W. Osage Bend, just west of campus, and from a Walker Park concession stand on West 15th Street.

A caller from Taco Bell near Interstate 540 and Wedington Drive reported a $400 water backflow preventer was taken, likely for the copper it contained, Montgomery said.

"Just be vigilant and aware of your surroundings," he advised, adding people should call police if they see something suspicious. "Have somebody with you if you can. Don't open your door just because somebody knocks."
