State tournaments postponed by ice

The Arkansas Activities Association has postponed today’s scheduled opening round of the high school state boys and girls basketball tournaments because of the ice and snow that has blanketed the state.

Play was scheduled to start in five of the seven classifications today and will be pushed back to Wednesday.

“The decision was based on a safety issue,” said Lance Taylor, the AAA executive director. “We wanted to make sure that everyone could travel to our state locations without hazardous driving conditions. The weather conditions are not favorable to travel on Tuesday.”

Now all of the tournaments will begin Wednesday. Tournaments postponed included Class 6A in Jonesboro, Class 5A in Alma, Class 3A in Charleston, Class 2A in Hampton and Class 1A in Harrison. The Class 7A tournament in Conway and the Class 4A tournament in Lonoke were not scheduled to start until Wednesday.

The postponement will push the semifinal rounds at the Class 6A, 5A, 3A, 2A and 1A tournaments to Sunday. The state finals remain scheduled for March 13-15 at Summit Arena in Hot Springs.

Starting times will remain the same for all state tournament games. The semifinal rounds will be played Sunday starting at 12:30 p.m.
