MEMPHIS - In these dry, suffragette days, women have the privilege of placing their dainty feet upon “a real brass railing” and ordering drinks right over the bar. The Peabody hotel has converted its bar into about the swellest soft drink emporium in Memphis, following the “dry” wave. Where formerly only the members of the male sex were allowed to quench their thirst, the women now, are allowed the same right. According to the “bartenders,” more than 100 women were waited upon at the bar yesterday. The novelty of the thing seems to appeal to the fair sex and they flocked in.

Little Rock police continued their assault on gambling today by nabbing a convicted bookmaker for the second time in a week as he tried vainly to swallow a list of names on a piece of paper. Sloan Bennett, who was arrested last Wednesday on a charge of accepting bets on horse races, was nabbed at 10th and Main this morning and charged with soliciting bets on horse races, a misdemeanor. Detectives G. F. Weeks and J. C. Terry said they stopped Bennett and prevented him from “swallowing up” a list of names written on a piece of paper. Brought to police headquarters, Bennett approached the desk sergeant to post bond. When he saw newspaper photographers in the vicinity, he threw $100 at the desk sergeant and ran out of the building. 25 YEARS AGO March 4, 1989

North Little Rock Police Chief Dale Bruce said Friday a patrol sergeant has been cleared of any wrongdoing for appearing in public dressed as a woman. “It was no big deal. He went to a masquerade party and won second place. He didn’t use his best judgment in going to the bar afterwards,” Bruce said. Sgt. James S. Brown, 33, was investigated by the Internal Affairs Department after fellow officers reported he was seen at a local bar dressed as a woman.

North Little Rock residents should have a chance to vote on whether they want to inhale secondhand cigarette smoke while eating in restaurants in the city, Alderman Greg Yielding said. To make that happen, Yielding is preparing a proposal to take to the North Little Rock City Council that would let voters decide if they want to ban smoking inside North Little Rock’s 236 restaurants. If approved by voters, a ban would be a first for central Arkansas.
