RED SOX Peavy hurt fishing

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Jake Peavy arrived at Boston’s spring training complex on Monday with a large white bandage covering his left index finger, the result of a weekend accident.

The right-hander, scratched from his scheduled spring training debut Monday against Pittsburgh in Bradenton, said he was hurt Saturday.

“Just getting ready to go fishing,” he said. “I promised my little boy I would take him fishing, so we went to Bass Pro and we bought us some rods and reels that were comboed.

Peavy said he was “trying to cut the wire tie that was holding them together, using the knife with my right hand and holding the rod with my left, and when I broke the wire tie, it struck the knuckle pretty good.”

Since Peavy didn’t want to disappoint his son they drove to teammate John Lackey’s house. But while pulling the knife out of his hand, Peavy said he struck a vein and got a good amount of bloodon his shorts.

Peavy said he threw away the shorts at Lackey’s house and changed. Lackey told Peavy he should get the wound examined.

Peavy then went fishing and didn’t catch anything.

“I couldn’t tell my 5-year-old I didn’t want to go fishing anymore,” Peavy said. “It was his last day here. I couldn’t say, ‘We’ll go tomorrow.’ It wasn’t the biggest deal in the world. Not much we could have done except - the biggest thing was, they were freaking out, thinking I was cleaning fish with the knife.”

Peavy, 32, acquired by Boston last summer, was 4-1 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 starts for the Red Sox last season and 0-1 with a 7.10 ERA in three postseason starts. He received several stitches Sunday to close the gash.

Red Sox Manager John Farrell said on Sunday that Peavy will not throw for three days.

MLB First replay stands

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The first review under Major League Baseball’s expanded replay system took place Monday and after a further look that took 2½ minutes, the call stood.

Toronto Manager John Gibbons used his challenge to ask umpires to review a play in the sixth inning of Monday’s game against Minnesota.

Chris Rahl of the Twins was called safe at first base when shortstop Munenori Kawasaki’s throw pulled Jared Goedert off the bag.

The umpires gathered in front of the first base dugout while the replay booth in New York looked at the play. After a wait of 2 minutes, 34 seconds, first base umpire Fieldin Culbreth spread his hands in the safe sign.

MLB has expanded replay this year beyond potential home runs and boundary calls. This season, most every play except for balls-and-strikes is subject to a manager challenging the ruling.

MLB used the expanded replay system at three games on Monday, two of them in Arizona. There was one challenge in those games, and the umpire’s call was upheld. Each team will get at least five games in spring training to test the system.

PADRES Maybin out 2-3 months

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - San Diego Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin is going to be out two to three months after rupturing his left biceps tendon during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

The Padres revealed the severity of the injury on Monday.

Maybin was injured while diving for a ball hit into the right-center gap and came up in obvious discomfort.

Maybin, 26, spent some time on the disabled list in 2013 and had surgery to repair his right wrist late in the season. He is entering the third year of a five-year, $25 million contract signed in the spring of 2012.

CARDINALS-TIGERS

Peralta hits two out

LAKELAND, Fla. - Jhonny Peralta hit two home runs against his former team, going deep in his only plate appearances Monday in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 8-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Peralta played for the Tigers for 3½ seasons before signing with St. Louis as a free agent this offseason. He said Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny asked a couple days earlier if he wanted to make the spring training trip to Lakeland to face Detroit. Peralta accepted that offer - then made his visit worthwhile with two home runs off left-hander Drew Smyly (Little Rock Central, Arkansas Razorbacks).

Nick Castellanos homered for the Tigers. Castellanos, Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Austin Jackson had two hits apiece.

Detroit, which played a 10-inning scoreless tie against Atlanta on Sunday, scored seven runs in the first three innings Monday.

DIAMONDBACKS Corbin starter in Sydney

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Patrick Corbin will start for the Diamondbacks when Arizona opens the major league season against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia on March 22.

Corbin, who went 14-8 last season with a 3.41 ERA, called getting the starting nod an honor. The left-hander was part of a Diamondbacks delegation that traveled to Sydney to promote the first-ever regular-season games to be played in Australia.

Right-hander Trevor Cahill, who went 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA in 2013, will start the second game for Arizona on March 23.

Manager Kirk Gibson announced his starters via Twitter on Monday.
