Lightning Damages Washington County Sheriff Radios

— Lightning struck the Washington County Sheriff's Office on Sunday. It knocked out some radio transmissions for about two hours but didn't cause any injuries or incidents.

The bolt struck the office's radio tower in the afternoon during the storm that moved through the area, said Carla Holcroft, dispatch manager.

The electricity moved through the tower to the radio equipment room, Holcroft said. It "fried" channel cards that carried communications for some county and small-town channels, she said.

Deputies used their phones or portable radios for about two hours. Communication was restored after the channel cards were swapped out.
