Woodland Girls Roll To Regional Title

— Fayetteville Woodland's girls put the finishing touches on a 24-1 season by upending fellow conference opponent Rogers High 37-27 on Saturday in the Junior High Regional Tournament at Panther Activity Center.

The Cowgirls never trailed, scoring the game's first bucket right off the opening tip and never looked back in defeating the Lady Mounties and capturing the 7A West regional championship after finishing as runner-up to Springdale Southwest in the Northwest Arkansas Conference.

"It was a Cinderella season," Woodland coach Marilyn Bauer said. "They only lost one game all year by one point and I'm just really proud of them. It took everyone on the bench and the people on the floor, and the people on the floor carried the load."

Lauren Holmes had 12 points en route to tournament most valuable player honors, while Kylee Coulter had 10 points to assist her.

"It's hard to give out MVPs and trophies because at some point everyone has their game," Bauer said. "But Kylee brings so much to the court and Lauren does a lot of stuff that goes unrecognized. And I thought Destiny Posey played great defense the whole tournament. She was assigned to the toughest player every night and that's what wins championships."

Rogers High was led by Elise Randells with 10 points, and she was named to the all-tournament team along with Posey from Woodland.

Boys

Fort Smith Kimmons 48, Woodland 32

For the first time in school history, Fort Smith Kimmons finished unbeaten courtesy of a 16-point victory over Woodland in the boys final.

The Raiders (25-0) got 23 points out of point guard Tevin Brewer, who was named the tournament's MVP following the contest.

"For three quarters, we hung with them," Woodland coach Jeff Boogaart said. "They hadn't been in a lot of close games, but then they start with three straight 3-pointers in the fourth and it kind of broke our back. But I was so proud of the guys, even when the writing was on the wall late, we had people diving for loose balls to try and get an extra possession."

Taylor Powell and Barrett Banister were named to the all-tournament team for the Cowboys (19-6), who were trying to add a regional title to a football conference championship and regular season conference crown.

"To line us up against nearly any team we played, we're so much less athletic, yet the heart and the determination and basketball skill came out, and that was a joy to be around this year," Boogaart said.
