BASE TRAIL PINNACLE MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Location: The trailhead shelter for West Summit/Base Trail is near the playground on Arkansas 300 about 2.1 miles north of Arkansas 10.

Length: The counterclockwise loop is 1.5 miles to the East Summit trailhead (another entry point) and an additional 2 miles back to the beginning, for 3.5 moderately difficult miles.

Main attractions: A worthy alternative for those who want a good sylvan hike but don’t relish the knee-straining trek to the top. Views of the Little Maumelle River and cool shade in the summer are highlights.

Hazards: The trail is rocky in most areas and muddy after a rain. No flip-flops!

Dog, bike, tyke friendly? There are nearby trails for mountain bikes, and the small fry will be happier on the paved Kingfisher Trail. But Fido will love this one. Squirrel!
