WARREN - Yesterday closed the fly contest that has been carried on in Warren for the last month. The Democrat-News offered $10 to the boy who caught the greatest number of flies, and the Warren Commercial Club $5 to the one who caught the next greatest number. The Women’s Civic League of the city offered 5 cents a dozen for all others caught. The hope is to catch all the flies now and stop them from breeding, and thus reduce their number flaring the summer months. A total of 1,441 dozen flies was caught.

Gov. Faubus has abandoned hopes of working out a compromise on voter registration before calling a special legislative session. But, Faubus said in a news conference today, he is still working behind the scenes in an effort to insure that and controversy will not lead to a lengthy, wrangling session. A young man with AIDS was barred from speaking Wednesday at Cloverdale Junior High School after parents complained. “The parents were concerned about the person being on campus and being infected with the AIDS virus,” said Gayle Bradford, the school’s principal. Bradford said that when the school nurse made a presentation about AIDS to the students, they had asked her to bring someone with AIDS to school so they could ask him questions directly. Tim Mason of Little Rock, who has AIDS, was asked to talk to the students. Parents who heard Mason was coming to the school called the Little Rock School District superintendent’s office to complain, Bradford said. “Of course, we know there is no problem with the infection, but the parents were concerned, and, of course, their children are their No. 1 priority,” Bradford said.

10 YEARS AGO March 2, 2004 CONWAY - Unless the state is willing to halt all charity car washes, Faulkner County should be allowed to use jail inmates to wash sheriff’s office patrol cars outside the county courthouse, said County Judge John Wayne Carter. The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality issued an administrative order last week against the county in an attempt to bring the county into compliance with a state law that prevents the pollution of state waterways.
