Mountain Home wins on late free throws

WEST MEMPHIS - Sky-Lar Culver sank two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to lift Mountain Home to a 63-61 victory over West Memphis in a 7A/6A-East boys game.

The Bombers (8-17, 4-10) held off a furious West Memphis rally, but Culver hit seven free throws in the final two minutes and 11 of his game high 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Mountain Home held a 56-42 lead with 2:40 left in the game, but West Memphis (12-14, 6-8) got two three-pointers and eight points from junior guard Gary Henderson in that span to trim the gap.

West Memphis junior Rai East converted a three-point play with 1:16 left to make it 60-55 before Henderson made two free throws to cut it to 60-57.

After Culver hit 1 of 2 free throws, East drove the baseline and hit a runner to make it 61-59 Mountain Home with 51 seconds to play.

West Memphis’ Vakemeyus Davis drew a charge on Mountain Home’s Blake McKee and it turned into a back-door layup by Darius Williams for a 61-61 tie with 10 seconds left.

Culver took the inbounds pass and outraced the Blue Devils to the other end and drew a foul from Williams with 1.5 seconds to play.

Culver sank both shots after a West Memphis timeout. A last-second attempt by the Blue Devils was short.

Preston Groesbeck scored 19 points for Mountain Home, Collin Oxford had 12 and Derek Curtis added 10.

West Memphis was led by Henderson’s 15 points while East added 11.
