U.S. Census map counts commutes

The U.S. Census Bureau's website has a new tool for estimating how Americans get to work, and it shows walking, cycling and taking the bus have increased slightly in Arkansas.

The interactive Census Explorer "commuter edition" shows that, as of 2012, the bureau estimates 1.8 percent of Arkansans walk, 0.1 percent bike and 0.4 percent ride public transportation to work.

Arkansas' bike commuters, estimated at 1,022 in 1990, numbered 1,330 for 2012. Walkers numbered 22,306 in 1990 but 27,058 in 2012. Bus riders rose from 4,194 in 1990 to 5,439.

Those numbers are dwarfed by the Arkansans who for the 2012 estimate reported driving a car, truck or van (93 percent in 2012), doing so alone (81.6 percent) or carpooling (11.5 percent).

The interactive map, available online at 1.usa.gov/TDZjgL, allows users to highlight each state, county or census tract and toggle through a menu of transportation modes for facts about that area.
