PRESERVING THE CLASSICS

Troupe's Broadway musicale amuses guests at mansion

As they have in the past, the Muses Creative Artistry Project came away from a performance at the Governor's Mansion on June 16 with a few more fans. The arts collective founded five years ago to preserve classical art and music through performance wowed the audience with nearly two dozen Broadway standards and classics.

The set list included "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story, "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera, "The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha, "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables, and some latter-day classics like "The Song That Goes Like This" from Spamalot and "Stars and the Moon" from Songs for a New World.

The troupe was led by artistic director Deleen Davidson. She was supported by soprano Katy Yerina, baritone Ken Goodman, and tenor Dustin Peterson, who came in from Wichita, Kan. Joining them were seven performance students from Henderson State University -- Paige Chastain, Taylor McNatt, Milton Moreno, Matthew Walker, Casey Williams, Hannah Perry and Larkin Parks.

The next performance, this one of opera classics, will be the weekend of Sept. 13-14 at the Muses Cultural Arts Center, 428 Orange St. in Hot Springs.
