Petition claims agency subverted law protecting mustangs

A helicopter is used in 2009 to round up wild horses on the Fox and Lake Herd Management Area in Washoe County, Nev. Advocates say wild mustangs are on the verge of extinction in North America and deserve protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Despite overall numbers in the tens of thousands, mustang advocates say the wild horse is on the verge of extinction in North America for the second time in 13,000 years.
