531st Air Force Band to play 3 dates in LR, Hot Springs

The Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, also known as the 531st Air Force Band, will make three central Arkansas appearances this week:

• At 7 p.m. Wednesday behind the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History in MacArthur Park, 503 E. Ninth St., Little Rock. Admission is free; in case of inclement weather, the concert will move next door to the Children's Theater at the Arkansas Arts Center. • At 9:15 p.m. Thursday for the fireworks show that ends the annual Oaklawn Spa Blast on the infield at Oaklawn, 2705 Central Ave., Hot Springs. Gates open at 4, and various groups and bands will perform. There will be a St. Vincent Kids Zone and rock climbing wall; Middleton Heat & Air will set up a "mist zone" to cool down attendees. • About 6:30 p.m. Friday as part of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's 31st annual Pops on the River at First Security Amphitheater in Little Rock's Riverfront Park, behind the River Market's Ottenheimer Market Hall, 400 President Clinton Ave. Gates open at noon with free activities for kids, a classic car show and arts, crafts and food vendors. Following the band will be the finals of the "Oh Say! Can You Sing?" contest; the winner(s) will sing the national anthem with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, which will perform up to the setting off of the fireworks, around 9:30 p.m. Admission is free. Photographer's tales

Georgia blues photographer Adam Smith will be the featured storyteller for the Tales From the South Tin Roof Project at 7 p.m. Tuesday at William F. Laman Public Library's Argenta branch, 420 Main St., North Little Rock. Doors open at 5 p.m. for dinner and drinks and music by the Salty Dogs. The show, which is syndicated, will be taped for broadcast on subscribing outlets around the nation; central Arkansas public radio station KUAR-FM, 89.1, will air it at 7 p.m. July 14.
