Work to cause lane closures on I-40 bridge to Memphis

Work on the Interstate 40 bridge in West Memphis will require lane closures Sunday and Monday, according to an Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department news release.

Crews with the Tennessee Department of Transportation will be moving an electronic message board and inspecting the bridge over the Mississippi River between Memphis and West Memphis, the release said.

The work will affect 1-40 traffic, both eastbound and westbound, between the Mississippi River bridge and the Arkansas Highway Police weigh station, located at mile marker 199.

From 5:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the westbound lanes of the bridge will be closed. A detour will be posted in which all westbound traffic will take Danny Thomas Boulevard to Crump Boulevard so drivers can cross the river on Interstate 55.

From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, the inside east and westbound lanes across the bridge will be closed so crews can remove the barrier rail that currently separates the east and westbound lanes, the release said.

Next week's construction is part of a project to install seismic expansion joints on the bridge. Lane shifts should be expected for the next several months, the release said.

Wide loads also will be prohibited during this time as the lanes will be more narrow than usual, according to the release.
