Second Thoughts

Nothing like waking up with a trophy

It took Michelle Wie 38 tries, but she finally won her first golf major championship Sunday at the U.S. Women's Open.

The long wait to glory was cause for celebration as Wie was seen drinking adult beverages out of her U.S. Open trophy the night of her victory.

The fun apparently continued until dawn as Wie made an appearance on Golf Channel with Damon Hack and said the trophy served as a cuddle buddy after her big victory.

"It still hasn't sunk in yet," Wie said. "I still don't believe it. I definitely slept with my trophy and had a lot of fun."

Hopefully for Wie, the trophy didn't hog the covers.

Rare play

The Milwaukee Brewers scored three runs on one wild pitch by Colorado Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich on Saturday. Brewers shortstop Jean Segura said he had never seen such a play in "my whole career."

Wrote Reggie Hayes of The News-Sentinel of Fort Wayne, Ind.: "Keep in mind Segura is only 24 and he rarely watches the Cubs."

There's Hope

Gold medalist soccer star Hope Solo has been arrested and held without bail for alleged domestic-violence assault.

Wrote Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: "Who says women athletes will never be the equals of men?"

Her favorite player

Lucy Li's favorite golfer is Webb Simpson, mainly because The Olympic Club is her favorite course and Simpson won the U.S. Open at Olympic. So it shouldn't be surprising that before the U.S. Women's Open began, the 11-year-old said her coolest moment was meeting Webb Simpson.

How they met is even better.

It was the opening round of the U.S. Open, and Simpson said there were several kids outside the clubhouse wanting an autograph. He noticed one young girl with braces who stayed there, not holding out anything to be signed.

"I said, 'Do you need me to sign something?' " Simpson said Tuesday. "She said, 'No, I'm playing in the tournament next week.' "

Pass on the Titos

As a guest on a Philadelphia sports talk show Monday evening, Charles Barkley thought the Philadelphia 76ers would be foolish to deal Michael Carter-Williams.

"He can work on his shot," Barkley said. "People said the same thing three years ago about Kawahi Leonard. He couldn't shoot. Now he's a terrific shooter. Michael Carter-Williams is Michael Jackson playing with a bunch of Tito Jacksons. You got to give him a chance, get him some help. I like Thaddeus Young... [long pause] Uh, and the rest of those guys, obviously.

"They got to figure out what to do with Thaddeus Young."
