Mayor vetoes pick to fill council seat

BAUXITE -- Bauxite Mayor Johnny McMahan has vetoed a second candidate for the vacant alderman position.

On June 16, aldermen appointed Bill Russell to fill the position. By Friday, McMahan vetoed that action, saying Russell did not have "the knowledge, qualifications, aptitude or the correct credentials to fulfill this position."

McMahan said he has known Russell for about eight years and believed the candidate "would be better served in other duties" in the city, but not as an alderman.

Earlier this month, McMahan vetoed the aldermen's appointment of Adam Kampbell, a former council member, he said in an email. The mayor pointed to Kampbell's six absences while the former council member served in 2012, along with Kampbell's open bankruptcy case.

The seat became vacant when Alderman Allison Cain resigned in April.
