Royals hold off Dodgers to end four-game skid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jeremy Guthrie pitched into the eighth inning, Jarrod Dyson drove in two runs off Zack Greinke and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Monday night to end a four-game losing streak.

Guthrie (5-6) allowed two runs and seven hits while winning his third consecutive start. He was buoyed by an offense that had only scored eight runs total during its recent slide.

Dyson, the Royals' No. 9 hitter, went 3 for 3 and stole two bases. Salvador Perez homered, and Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar -- two of the players acquired by the Royals in the trade that sent Greinke to Milwaukee in December 2010 -- drove in a run apiece.

Greg Holland served up a home run to Adrian Gonzalez in the ninth before earning his 22nd save.

Hanley Ramirez drove in the other two runs for the Dodgers, who are visiting Kansas City for the first time since they were swept in a three-game set in 2005.

In his third start against his former team, Greinke (9-4) was battered for a season-high 5 runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He had allowed just two runs over 15 1/3 innings in his previous two starts against the Royals, one with the Brewers and the other with the Los Angeles Angels.

The Royals pounded Greinke almost from the start, Perez belting the first pitch of the second inning over the wall in left field for a 1-0 lead. Then with two outs, Escobar singled and went to second on a wild pitch before heading home when Dyson dumped a single into left field.

Dyson made it 3-0 in the fifth when he scored on Cain's single to right.

The Royals finally knocked Greinke from the game in the fifth, this time after Perez started the inning with a double. Greinke fought back to get two outs, but Escobar hit a triple into the right-field corner and Dyson tacked on another RBI single to make it 5-0.

That hit ended Greinke's night. As he departed the mound, fans showered him with a chorus of boos, clearly recalling how the right-hander once demanded to be traded from their team.

PIRATES 8, RAYS 1 Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run home run to back the pitching of Edinson Volquez and lead visiting Pittsburgh to a victory over Tampa Bay. Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 5, drove in 2 runs and stole 2 bases for the Pirates in a homecoming of sorts for the 2013 NL MVP, who grew up in nearby Fort Meade, Fla., and had never played before at Tropicana Field. He also scored twice in Pittsburgh's first appearance in St. Petersburg since 2003.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

BLUE JAYS 8, YANKEES 3 Adam Lind hit a three-run home run in his return to the starting lineup, Marcus Stroman won for the first time in three starts and host Toronto beat New York, handing the Yankees their third consecutive loss. Stroman (4-2) allowed 1 run and 3 hits in a career-high 8 innings. He walked one and matched a career high with seven strikeouts.

ORIOLES 6, WHITE SOX 4 Chris Davis hit a pinch-hit, three-run home run in the ninth inning to give host Baltimore a victory over the Chicago White Sox. Davis was not in the starting lineup after batting just .130 in his previous 14 starts. Called upon by Manager Buck Showalter with runners on first and second and one out in the ninth, Davis launched a 3-2 pitch from Ronald Belisario (3-4) into the seats in right field.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CARDINALS 8, ROCKIES 0 Lance Lynn allowed three hits in eight innings and Matt Adams ignited the offense with two home runs and a career-high six RBIs as visiting St. Louis shut out slumping Colorado. Lynn (8-5) struck out seven and walked none before being taken out for the ninth after throwing 108 pitches. It's the first time Colorado has been held scoreless at Coors Field since last July. Adams' big night included a two-run single in the third, a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run home run in the seventh.

REDS 6, CUBS 1 Devin Mesoraco hit a grand slam with two outs in visiting Cincinnati's five-run ninth inning, leading the Reds to a victory over the Chicago Cubs. Mesoraco went deep for the fourth consecutive game, driving a 1-0 pitch from Hector Rondon (1-2) into the basket in left-center for his 13th home run. It was Mesoraco's second grand slam of the season and No. 3 of his career.

NATIONALS 3, BREWERS 0 Gio Gonzalez combined with three relievers to hold Milwaukee's potent lineup to three hits, and Adam LaRoche hit a three-run home run to help visiting Washington beat Milwaukee. Gonzalez (4-4) walked 4 and struck out 5 in 6 innings. It was the left-hander's second start following a stint on the disabled list for left shoulder inflammation.

MARLINS 4, PHILLIES 0 Casey McGehee hit a two-run double, Nathan Eovaldi pitched six-hit ball into the seventh inning and visiting Miami downed Philadelphia.
