CONWAY --Ty Tice and Timmy Seldomridge are both playing plenty of baseball this summer to prepare for their college careers, but that didn't stop them from jumping at the chance to be a part of the Arkansas High School Coaches' Association All-Star Games.

They will be teammates on the West All-Star team, which will try to extend its winning ways from a year ago. The West swept the doubleheader 2-1 and 6-1 a year ago. It will be the 11th year for baseball to be a part of All-Star Week. The West holds a slight 11-10-1 lead in the series.

"It's an honor really," said Tice, who will play in the fall at Central Arkansas." It's definitely special to be selected. It's going to be fun."

Tice, a two-way player and All-State selection at Prairie Grove, will get an early preview of the UCA Bear Field turf in today's doubleheader, which is slated to begin at 5 p.m. He will also look at being a two-way player in college, but Tice knows it won't be easy.

"It's challenging, but I'm looking forward to it."

Seldomridge, an All-State shortstop at Rogers High, will also stay in the state to play at Arkansas State. He views the All-Star selection as a payoff for his years of hard work.

Tice has been playing with a travel team this summer to prepare for college, while Seldomridge will go to Indiana to play for the month of July.

Seldomridge said coaches of the Indiana Breakers team saw him play Rogers during spring break in Arizona and were impressed.

"They saw me there and invited me to come play," Seldomridge said. "I feel like it will get me ready for college being away from home, playing and working out."

West coach Kirk Bock, who guided Bryant to the Class 7A state title this year, is excited about the athleticism of his team.

He singled out Arkadelphia's Jakahari Howell, who was a late addition to the roster, and also talked about Seldomridge.

"We went after Jakahari, but we thought he was going to play in the All-Star football game," Bock said. "We're really happy to get him. It's a blessing for us really. The kid from Rogers is one of the best shortstops in the state. We've got great athletes and good kids.

"It's an honor for me to get to coach kids like this for a couple of days."

Bock also got the chance to go against El Dorado's Ty Owens, who will play at Ouachita Baptist in the fall, and came away impressed.

"He's an exciting kid," Bock said. "He's very athletic, and we're glad to have him on our side."

East coach Joe Allbritton of Mayflower said it's exciting to get the opportunity to coach some of the top talent in the state.

"I was an assistant here last year and see someone like Alex Gosser, who was in this game last year and see him step in for the Hogs, that's really neat," Allbritton said. "I had the pleasure of coaching some of these kids in the Xtra Innings Showcase last summer."

Allbritton pointed out Eric White of Parkers Chapel and Little Rock Central's Joey Abraham as two standouts on his roster. White was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 32nd round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month.

Abraham, one of the top arms in the state, has signed to play at Vanderbilt.
