The bike park is one of the improvements slated for Lake Atlanta Park. The bike park will be south of Lake Atalanta with the main entrance off East Cherry Street.

The park will offer mountain bike riders the opportunity to test their skills on a variety of trails, city officials said.

"There will be bike trails for beginners up to expert," said David Hook, city facilities development manager. "The bike trails will be dirt with hills, jumps and other amenities that bike riders should enjoy."

There will be about 11 miles of trail in the park, including a concrete trail surrounding the bike park.

Two dog parks, one for small dogs and one for larger ones, will be in the park along with a playground, two restroom facilities and a multilevel meeting space that can be rented for events, Hook said.

Downtown merchants have said they support the Lake Atalanta work.

"I think it's going to be great when it's finished," said Julie Colgan, owner of The Rusty Chair. "It's a step in the right direction. Everyone I talk to downtown is supportive of the renovation project."

Aldermen may consider buying three land parcels at the intersection of First and Oak streets to be used for a roundabout to be built as part of improvement to Monte Ne Road, and First and Arkansas streets. The land will be used to extend Oak Street through to the roundabout. Oak dead ends on Second Street and begins again at First Street.

The agenda shows a vote on the $95,000 land purchase, but the item may be removed from the agenda, said Lance Jobe, city engineer.

"I believe the item will be taken off the agenda Tuesday because aldermen don't have to approve the purchase. This is part of the planned widening of First Street. We have been buying the needed property for several months as part of the 2011 bond election without having to seek council approval. This purchase should be no different," Jobe said.
