Error-prone Naturals falter in 9th vs. Drillers

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals were tied with the Tulsa Drillers heading into the ninth inning Sunday at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.

Then Jared Simon led off with a home run, Joey Wong doubled, Malcolm Culver committed a throwing error and the Drillers dropped in four ninth-inning runs in a 10-6 victory in the final game before the Texas League All-Star break.

The Naturals will limp into the break having lost three consecutive games, and this loss came after Northwest Arkansas built a 3-0 lead after four innings.

Tulsa took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when Wong hit a two-run triple and David Kandilas hit a two-run home run.

The Naturals then aided the Drillers with their gloves, committing three errors leading to three unearned runs over the final four innings.

In the sixth, Hunter Dozier's error allowed Jayson Langfels to reach base. Langfels later scored on a sacrifice fly and Tyler Massey, who walked, scored on a groundout as the Drillers took a 6-3 lead.

The Naturals tied the game with a run on the sixth when Cheslor Cuthbert singled and scored on a groundout, then scored two in the seventh when Ethan Chapman walked, Lane Adams singled and both scored on an error.

The Drillers held them hitless the rest of the way, and Culver gave up four runs in the ninth.

Simon led off with his sixth home run, Wong doubled and Featherston walked. Wong scored when Culver fielded Kandilas' sacrifice bunt and threw wildly, allowing Featherston to go to third and Kandilas to second. Culver walked Ryan Casteel to load the bases and Langfels hit a sacrifice fly to score one run and Kandilas scored on a ground out.

Cuthbert, Dozer, Threlkeld and Gibbs each had two hits for the Naturals, who won their first three games of the second half before losing their last three.
