Holliday, Wainwright lead Cards over Phillies

ST. LOUIS -- Matt Holliday broke an eighth-inning tie with a double, and Adam Wainwright tossed eight strong innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia that snapped the Phillies' season-high five-game winning streak on Saturday.

Holliday ripped a one-out double off Cole Hamels to bring in Matt Carpenter to make it 2-1. Carpenter started the rally with a leadoff walk.

Wainwright (10-3) allowed one run and six hits, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter for the Cardinals, who broke a three-game losing streak. Wainwright pitched on 10 days' rest after missing a start due to elbow tendinitis.

Trevor Rosenthal earned his 21st save in 24 attempts.

Hamels (2-4) gave up three runs and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings. He had a scoreless streak of 24 2/3 innings snapped on Matt Adams' second-inning sacrifice fly.

St. Louis added two more runs in the eighth to go up 4-1. Jhonny Peralta brought in Holliday with an infield ground out, and Adams followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game.

Philadelphia had tied it 1-1 in the third inning on successive singles by Cody Asche and Hamels, and a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Rollins. Asche, who grew up in nearby O'Fallon, Mo., recorded his first hit at Busch Stadium.

Rollins extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the eighth inning.

BREWERS 9, ROCKIES 4 Aramis Ramirez had three hits, including a home run, and Wily Peralta won his fourth consecutive start as visiting Milwaukee beat error-prone Colorado. Carlos Gomez extended his hitting streak to 17 games to help the Brewers improve to 5-1 on their seven-game trip.

METS 4, MARLINS 0 Jacob deGrom pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his first victory for New York as his team beat host Miami. Lucas Duda hit a two-run home run, his 10th, and David Wright had three hits and an RBI for New York, which has won three of four. It was the second shutout in the series for the Mets as Zack Wheeler tossed a 1-0 shutout on Thursday.

NATIONALS 3, BRAVES 0 Doug Fister pitched eight shutout innings, and Anthony Rendon had three hits and two RBI as host Washington beat Atlanta. Fister (6-2) allowed 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

PIRATES 5, CUBS 3 Josh Harrison homered and drove in three runs, leading Vance Worley and visiting Pittsburgh to a rain-delayed victory over Chicago. Worley (1-0) pitched into the seventh inning for his first win with the Pirates.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ATHLETICS 2, RED SOX 1 Coco Crisp singled in Alberto Callaspo with one out in the 10th inning and host Oakland beat Boston to extend its winning streak to five games. Callaspo drew a leadoff walk against reliever Edward Mujica (2-3) and was sacrificed to second. Red Sox closer Koji Uehara replaced Mujica before Crisp lined his first pitch into right field. Boston right fielder Brock Holt made a strong throw but Callaspo slid home with the game-winner.

MARINERS 2, ROYALS 1 Dustin Ackley drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out ninth inning single as visiting Seattle beat Kansas City. Ackley's single to right on a 2-2 count scored Kyle Seager, who doubled with two outs to start the game-winning rally. Seager moved to third on Stefen Romero's infield single before Ackley's hit. Ackley is 5-for-10 off Jason Vargas (7-3), who took the loss.

ORIOLES 6, YANKEES 1 Nelson Cruz hit his 23rd home run, J.J. Hardy connected for his first of the season and visiting Baltimore beat New York after starter Bud Norris left with tightness in his groin. Adam Jones and Steve Pearce also went deep against struggling soft-tosser Vidal Nuno, helping the Orioles rebound after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning of a 5-3 loss Friday night.

RAYS 8, ASTROS 0 Jake Odorizzi allowed one hit and struck out 10 while pitching into the eighth inning as host Tampa Bay beat Houston. Odorizzi (3-7) retired his first 10 batters before Jose Altuve's one-out infield single in the fourth that went off the pitcher's leg.

TWINS 4, WHITE SOX 3 Joe Mauer hit a tworun double that just missed reaching the seats and Kevin Correia pitched a smooth six innings to help Minnesota beat visiting Chicago.

TIGERS 5, INDIANS 4 (10) Miguel Cabrera doubled with one out in the 10th inning to drive in the go-ahead run and lift visiting Detroit to a victory over Cleveland.

INTERLEAGUE

REDS 11, BLUE JAYS 1 Jay Bruce's home run helped the Reds get ahead 8-0 for the second day in a row, and Mike Leake made this big lead stand up, pitching eight innings for a victory over visiting Toronto. A day earlier, the Blue Jays pulled off the second-biggest comeback in their history. Down 8-0 after the second inning, they rallied to a 14-9 victory behind a pair of home runs from Edwin Encarnacion.
