HIGHLIGHTS

URUGUAY 2, ENGLAND 1

Luis Suarez scored twice to give Uruguay a victory over England in Sao Paulo on Thursday, making an instant impact on his return from injury. The striker scored the winner in the 85th minute in the Group D match after seeing his first-half score canceled out by England’s Wayne Rooney. Suarez, who hadn’t played for more than a month after undergoing knee surgery, is the Uruguay player who knows this England side best, having played for Liverpool for more than three years. And by pushing his career World Cup goal tally to five, Suarez took the gloss off Rooney finally scoring his first on soccer’s biggest stage at his third tournament. Rooney scored from close range in the 75th minute.

COLOMBIA 2, IVORY COAST 1

Colombia scored twice in six minutes in a lively second half to beat Ivory Coast in Brasilia, Brazil, on Thursday and moved to the knockout stage. James Rodriguez’s powerful header from a corner in the 64th minute was quickly followed by a low finish by substitute Juan Quintero, securing the South Americans’ second consecutive victory in Group C in front of a pro-Colombian crowd.

GREECE 0, JAPAN 0, TIE

Reduced to 10 men after captain Costas Katsouranis was sent off in the 38th minute with his second yellow card, Greece held on for a draw with Japan at Natal, Brazil, on Thursday that keeps both alive in Group C. Both teams inserted new strikers in search of goals and a first victory, but ultimately the goal was survival and both did that with one match left in group play.
