SPRINGDALE -- David Petrino is in a pretty good spot right now in his baseball career.

Petrino, a former Shiloh Christian standout who helped the Saints win multiple state championships, was drafted in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago Cubs. He is considering that opportunity and has until mid-July to decide whether to sign a professional baseball contract.

He has also signed to play baseball at Oklahoma State, where he would primarily play third base for this year's Big 12 champion Cowboys.

"We're still talking," Petrino said. "I talk to the Cubs scout a lot. They are still trying to sign their front guys first. If there's money left over maybe they'll be able to get me. If not, I'll head to Oklahoma State and try next year."

Petrino has enjoyed tremendous success the past two seasons at Central Arizona College. As a sophomore this spring, he led the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference in hitting with a .426 average. He had 19 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 40 RBIs and scored 31 runs as the Vaqueros posted a 42-16 record. Petrino was a unanimous first team All-ACCAC selection.

His numbers are even more impressive considering the team only used wood bats. Petrino said he has not swung an aluminum bat since his final game at Shiloh Christian in 2012.

Petrino said he enjoyed his time at Central Arizona, which is located in Coolidge, Ariz.

"It was awesome," he said. "It was a good experience to get away from home and get some new eyes on me."

He made an immediate impact for the Vaqueros as a freshman, earning all-conference honors after hitting .321 with 34 RBIs.

This summer, he played briefly for a team in Mankato, Minn., in the Northwoods League. He is back in Northwest Arkansas now, but will be leaving soon to join a JUCO All-American team that will compete in the 80th National Baseball Congress World Series in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan.

"The National Baseball Congress is very excited to have the NJCAA National Team compete in the 80th Annual World Series," said NBC General Manager Josh Robertson in a news release. "It will be the first time since 1999 that a USA National Team has competed in the tournament and our fans still remember how exciting it was to have them here."

Petrino (5-foot-11, 200 pounds) said he will be leaving for Iowa to begin practicing with the team before it opens play in the NBC World Series, scheduled for July 25 through Aug. 9.

If Petrino does play at Oklahoma State next season, his former high school coach from Shiloh Christian, Jimmy Harris, will be nearby. Harris is the baseball coach at Stillwater High School, and won a state championship this spring.

As a late round draft pick, Petrino is optimistic that he could still sign with the Cubs, but seems realistic that he will play for the Cowboys.

"I think the chances that I will sign are not high," he said. "It's going to be hard to get me away from Oklahoma State. I'm probably going to end up at Oklahoma State."

Either way, Petrino is ready to continue what has already been a stellar baseball career.
