Second thoughts

Hard to work without tools of your trade

United Airlines lost and then found Rory McIlroy’s golf clubs this week.

It would appear the Chicagobased airline lost McIlroy’s clubs somewhere between Newark Liberty International and the Dublin Airport.

The Northern Irish golfer sent out a less than thrilled tweet Tuesday asking United if it had an update on that lost bag of equipment he needs to make money.

“Hey @united landed in Dublin yesterday morning from Newark and still no golf clubs… Sort of need them this week… Can someone help!?”

Fortunately for McIlroy, the airline located his clubs and they were delivered to him Wednesday, the day before the start of the Irish Open.

Breaking bad

Johnny Cueto should stick to pitching. The Cincinnati Reds starter attempted — and failed — to break a bat over his knee after striking out looking in the fourth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

And his tough luck continued on the mound. The 28-year-old gave up only 2 runs on 7 hits but issued 4 walks over 6 innings in a no-decision. His 1.92 ERA is the second-best in all of baseball but Cueto only has a 6-5 record in 15 starts to show for it.

Cueto told C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer after the eventual 6-5 Reds victory he never felt comfortable.

“Yes, I battled a lot. I didn’t even think I was going to be able to throw one inning,”the right-hander said through an interpreter. “I didn’t feel good at all.”

And that little situation with the lumber couldn’t have helped.

Just think about it

Oakland starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz, who entered Monday night’s game with an ERA under 2, broke his right hand punching a chair after giving up 8 runs in a loss to the Texas Rangers.

“And the A’s are in first place,” wrote Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com. “Imagine what Pomeranz might have done if he pitched for the Cubs.”
