Rockies' pitcher suspended

Rockies pitcher Nick Masset has been suspended three games and fined for throwing a pitch at Braves catcher Evan Gattis on Thursday. Braves reliever David Carpenter was also fined for throwing at Rockies outfielder Corey Dickerson in the same game, which featured several ejections, including Colorado Manager Walt Weiss. The amount of the fines was not disclosed.

• Oakland Athletics left-hander Drew Pomeranz was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a broken right hand. Right-hander Evan Scribner, who was on Oakland's opening-day roster, was recalled from Class AAA Sacramento. The A's also acquired minor league lefty Brad Mills from the Milwaukee Brewers for cash. Pomeranz took the loss Monday night against Texas after allowing a career-high eight runs -- seven earned -- in 3 2-3 innings. He was called into Manager Bob Melvin's office before addressing the media after the game. Pomeranz, who was holding a plate of food in his right hand, did not indicate anything was wrong when speaking to reporters. He is 5-4 with a 2.91 ERA in 17 games, including eight starts, with the A's.

• Kansas City Royals outfielder Nori Aoki left Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Tigers with left groin discomfort. Aoki singled and scored during Kansas City's seven-run second inning, but he was replaced in right field by Lorenzo Cain before the bottom half. The 32-year-old Aoki is hitting .261 in his first season with the Royals. They acquired him in an offseason trade with Milwaukee.

• The Boston Red Sox have designated outfielder Grady Sizemore for assignment. The move comes as Sizemore struggles after injuries sidelined him between September 2011 and this season. He made the All-Star team three times with the Cleveland Indians and had seven operations since 2009, including surgery on both knees, his back and elbow. Sizemore hit .333 in spring training and started in center field on opening day when he homered in Boston's 2-1 loss at Baltimore. But in 52 games, he hit .216 with two home runs and 15 RBI.

• The Baltimore Orioles have activated right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list. The move was announced before Tuesday night's game against Tampa Bay. Gonzalez had been out since May 31 with a strained right oblique. To make room on the roster for Gonzalez, reliever Josh Stinson was designated for assignment. Also, catcher Matt Wieters had season-ending right elbow ligament replacement surgery Tuesday.

• The Atlanta Braves have placed reliever David Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right biceps. Carpenter got off to a good start in April, but a drop in velocity has contributed to a 5.19 ERA in his last 17 1/3 innings over the last two months. Right-hander Pedro Beato was recalled from Class AAA Gwinnett on Tuesday to take Carpenter's spot on the 25-man roster.

• The Texas Rangers have signed Carlos Pena to a minor league contract in an effort to find help with their top four first basemen on the disabled list. Pena will be available at Class AAA Round Rock either Tuesday or Wednesday. The 36-year-old was released from a minor league deal by the Los Angeles Angels in spring training. Pena had a .207 average with Houston and Kansas City last year.

Oklahoma State player stabbed

Police say an Oklahoma State football player has reported being stabbed, kidnapped and robbed. Stillwater police Capt. Randy Dickerson says the player told officers he was attacked Monday night. He says the player was treated at a Stillwater hospital for knife wounds to his abdomen and his right arm. Dickerson declined to release the player's name. Oklahoma State athletic department spokesman Gavin Lang said it is too early for the university to comment and referred questions to police. Dickerson says the player told detectives he was trying to walk to a friend's house when witnesses saw him and called police.

• Louisiana-Lafayette reserve quarterback Jalen Nixon has been suspended and backup cornerback Simeon Thomas is academically ineligible for the 2014 season. Sports Information Director Matt Sullivan said Nixon was suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules. The nature of Nixon's violation wasn't disclosed. He's expected to miss the entire 2014 season. Nixon finished the year with 6-of-12 passing for 108 yards and one touchdown. Thomas played nine games last season, missing the first three while awaiting the NCAA to rule if he had met initial academic qualifying standards.

Johnny Manziel agreed to a contract with the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, becoming the fourth of the team's six draft picks to do so. The former Heisman Trophy winner will enter training camp next month as Cleveland's No. 2 quarterback behind veteran Brian Hoyer, who has been limited during offseason practices while recovering from offseason knee surgery. Browns Coach Mike Pettine has stressed that Manziel has some catching up to do, but has made it clear that Hoyer's lead was not "insurmountable."

• The New York Jets have signed third-round draft pick Dexter McDougle to a four-year deal. Tuesday night's contract for the cornerback means all 12 of the Jets' draft picks are in the fold. McDougle missed the final nine games at Maryland last season with a shoulder injury. The speedy defensive back was cleared by Jets team doctors last week to participate fully in practice. He worked with the second-team defense during the team's first minicamp practice Tuesday and drew raves from Coach Rex Ryan after breaking up a few passes.

• The Cleveland Browns have released wide receiver Earl Bennett about a month after signing him to a free agent contract. The team announced the move Tuesday on Twitter. No explanation was given for the release. Cleveland signed Bennett on May 15 to help ease the blow from the potential loss of wide receiver Eric Gordon, who could be facing a potential lengthy suspension for failing a drug test. The 27-year-old Bennett started 29 games and has 185 career receptions for 2,277 yards and 12 touchdowns during his six seasons with the Chicago Bears. He was released this past offseason in a salary cap move. He had 32 receptions for 243 yards and four touchdowns last season.

• Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Hatcher has a knee injury that will keep him out of minicamp. Coach Jay Gruden said Tuesday that Hatcher has "a little bit of pain, a little bit of swelling," and will have an X-ray and an MRI. Gruden said he didn't know when Hatcher was hurt. The coach said the focus is to make sure Hatcher is ready for training camp, which begins next month.

Stars buy out Rome's contract

The Dallas Stars have bought out the final year of defenseman Aaron Rome's contract, a move that will give the club more salary cap space. Under the NHL collective bargaining agreement, teams were given two amnesty buyouts that must be used by the end of the month. With Tuesday's move, the Stars will pay Rome two-thirds of the $1.6 million he was set to earn next season. That money won't count against the salary cap. Rome, who signed a three-year, free-agent contract in 2012, had one assist in 25 games during an injury-plagued season with the Stars. He played once during Dallas' six-game playoff loss to Anaheim.
