• Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former U.S. secretary of state, said while in Toronto to promote her new book, Hard Choices, that the proposed Keystone XL pipeline shouldn't be seen as a proxy for the relationship between the United States and Canada, whose government has urged President Barack Obama's administration to approve the pipeline as a source of jobs.

• Christopher Mitchell, 42, a central Florida man who weighs about 450 pounds and is accused of hiding cocaine and 23 grams of marijuana under his "stomach fat," was arrested after a Volusia County sheriff's deputy stopped a vehicle after noticing that Mitchell, a passenger, wasn't wearing a seat belt.

• Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl, who formerly served as deputy commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was named by the Army to investigate the disappearance and capture in 2009 in Afghanistan of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was exchanged last month for five Taliban prisoners held at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

• Robert Short, 64, of Fresno, Calif., was booked on several drug charges, accused of cooking methamphetamine inside his apartment at a facility for senior citizens.

• Tara Dennis, 21, who tried to rescue a cat from a tree in Erie, Pa., ended up needing to be rescued by firefighters after ascending the tree and getting stuck as she tried to get down.

• Abdullah Elshamy, 26, an Al-Jazeera journalist who has been on hunger strike in Egypt for more than four months to protest his prolonged detention without charges or trial, was ordered released by the country's top prosecutor, who cited "health conditions."

• Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese opposition leader, said while visiting Nepal that it is up to the will of the people of her country whether she becomes their president, reacting to a vote against changing a constitutional clause that bars her from the office.

• Pope Francis and the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the 80 million-strong Anglican Communion, denounced human trafficking as a crime against human dignity at the Vatican and pledged to combat it jointly.

• Timothy Deegan, 53, an accountant in Gainesville, Fla., was being held in lieu of $300,000 bond on charges of human trafficking, accused of keeping three women trapped in virtual slavery for months, prostituting them and videotaping sex acts to put online.
