Royals extend winning streak to 5, beat White Sox

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ROYALS 7, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO -- Lorenzo Cain had a two-run double to highlight a five-run first inning, Jeremy Guthrie pitched into the sixth inning and Kansas City extended its winning streak to five games with a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night.

Guthrie (3-6) allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings to snap an 11-game winless streak. Guthrie's last victory was on April 9, against Tampa Bay.

Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler of the White Sox each had two RBI, including a run-scoring single in the first inning.

Jose Quintana (3-7) never recovered from the slow start, allowing six runs and eight hits in six innings.

Jose Abreu went 1 for 4 with an RBI for the White Sox.

The Royals staked Guthrie to a five-run lead before he took the mound.

The first four batters -- Nori Aoki, Omar Infante, Hosmer and Butler -- all singled to make it 2-0 and fifth-place hitter Alex Gordon followed with a double to right field to make it 3-0.

After Quintana struck out Salvador Perez for the first out of the game, Cain stroked a double to left to drive in two more and made it 5-0.

The White Sox got a run back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Abreu. The Royals got it back in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Hosmer.

BLUE JAYS 4, ORIOLES 0 Drew Hutchison scattered six hits over seven innings in another sparkling performance on the road, and Toronto got a two-run home run from Juan Francisco in a victory over host Baltimore.

TWINS 2, TIGERS 0 Kyle Gibson threw seven innings and Eduardo Escobar hit a solo home run in the third and drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth as visiting Minnesota beat Detroit. The Tigers left seven on base against Gibson.

RED SOX 10, INDIANS 3 A.J. Pierzynski, Mike Napoli and Dustin Pedroia hit two-run doubles and host Boston scored its season-high in runs in a victory over Cleveland.

RAYS 6, ASTROS 1 Alex Cobb had 11 of visiting Tampa Bay's season high-tying 16 strikeouts, helping his team to its first road victory in almost a month over Houston. Ben Zobrist, Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria drove in two runs apiece.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CARDINALS 1, NATIONALS 0 Lance Lynn threw eight innings of two-hit ball and Matt Adams homered on his first swing since coming off the disabled list, leading host St. Louis to a victory over Jordan Zimmermann and Washington. Lynn (7-4) retired his first 16 batters and struck out eight with no walks against the National League East leaders.

CUBS 2, PHILLIES 1 Jake Arrieta threw seven impressive innings, Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer and visiting Chicago beat Philadelphia in a matchup of last-place teams. Arrieta (2-1) allowed two hits and no runs, tying a career high with nine strikeouts.

PIRATES 8, MARLINS 6 (13) Gregory Polanco broke a tie in the 13th inning with his first major league home run, and Pittsburgh overcame a ninth-inning meltdown to beat host Miami. Polanco, playing in his fourth big league game, went 5 for 7, scored three times and made a run-saving catch in right field.

REDS 6, BREWERS 5 Billy Hamilton drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the ninth inning, and visiting Cincinnati capitalized on four Milwaukee errors for a victory.

METS 6, PADRES 2 Bobby Abreu went 4 for 4 with two RBI and Bartolo Colon pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning as host New York turned to a pair of 40-somethings to beat San Diego.

INTERLEAGUE

BRAVES 4, ANGELS 3 Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and host Atlanta edged Los Angeles for its first interleague win. Aaron Harang (5-5) allowed one run in six innings to end a streak of five consecutive starts without a win.
