FAYETTEVILLE -- Tim Hudson, president of the Fayetteville School Board, is seeking re-election to the Zone 5 seat he has held since 2004.

"It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve the patrons of the Fayetteville school district, and I would like to continue that service. We are in an important transition period as our current superintendent, Vicki Thomas, is leaving Fayetteville," Hudson said. "I want to do all I can to support our new superintendent, Dr. Paul Hewitt, as he assumes his new duties."

Hewitt has started in his new position. His one-year contract begins July 1.

Hudson said he wants the transition to Hewitt's superintendency to be as successful as possible.

"In addition, the district has important initiatives under way with the final stage of renovation and transformation of Fayetteville High School as well as the continued implementation of the Common Core standards and the curriculum that our teachers and staff are developing."

Hudson headed one of two residents committees that considered either building a high school at another location or renovating the school. The School Board opted to renovate the school.

He was first elected to the board in 2004 and was named president two years ago. The zone he represents is in midtown and includes the Wilson Park and Washington Elementary School neighborhoods. He is a former president of the Washington Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization.

"He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the board," said Chris Lawson, an attorney who represents the School Board.

Lawson said he and Hudson hadn't worked together until he became board attorney about a year ago. Hudson has effective communication skills, pays attention to details, has a knowledge of policy and laws and has a real heart for education, he said.

"He brings all of that to the table," Lawson said.

No other candidates have announced plans to seek the Zone 5 seat.

Potential candidates must gather 20 signatures from registered voters in the zone in which they live. Petitions can be circulated now.

Filing for school board seats begins July 1 and ends at noon July 8.

The annual school election is Sept. 16.
