High-speed pursuit ends in man's arrest

A Sherwood man fleeing from authorities in a stolen car Thursday morning reached speeds of 120 mph as he was pursued more than 12 miles from southwest Little Rock into North Little Rock, according to an arrest report.

A Pulaski County sheriff's deputy reported and began pursuit of a Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on Interstate 30 at more than 120 mph. The vehicle, which had been reported stolen out of Hot Springs, entered the left emergency lane of the interstate and continued traveling at more than 100 mph, according to the report.

The chase was suspended when the Mustang exited I-30 onto Roosevelt Road, but the deputy spotted the car traveling north on Scott Street soon afterward and called for backup.

Deputies and Little Rock police officers left their emergency lights off as they trailed the Mustang to West Markham and South Spring streets, but they were spotted by the suspect, who fled again.

After the Mustang crossed the Broadway Bridge into North Little Rock, state police took control of the pursuit, and a state trooper unsuccessfully tried to fishtail the car at West Eighth and Maple streets, according to the report. The suspect then entered a Union Pacific Railroad maintenance facility at 800 Pike Ave., where he drove onto train tracks and the Mustang became stuck.

Byron Jones, 29, exited the vehicle and briefly fled on foot before surrendering about 11:25 a.m.

No injuries were reported in the chase.

Jones was charged with numerous traffic violations including reckless driving, speeding, driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving without insurance and driving while intoxicated.

He was additionally charged with fleeing, theft by receiving, criminal trespassing and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Jones was being held at the Pulaski County jail in lieu of $17,500 bond late Thursday.

Suspect in invasion gets murder charge

After a suspect in a Hensley home invasion died while fleeing the scene, one of her accused partners in the heist was charged Thursday with murder.

Cloie Joles, Reddie Stanley and Elijah Cooley were fleeing in a pickup Monday night when they crashed into a tree in the 4700 block of West Hensley Road, the Pulaski County sheriff's office reported. Minutes earlier, the three had purportedly forced their way inside a home about a mile away and attacked and robbed a 77-year-old resident.

Each of the suspects was injured in the crash, but Cooley purportedly ran away before emergency personnel and deputies arrived.

Joles and Stanley were transported to UAMS Medical Center for treatment, where the 36-year-old Joles was pronounced dead.

On Wednesday, Cooley was located at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock and arrested. He told investigators that Stanley was driving the truck and that before the crash, he and Joles asked him several times to slow down, according to a court affidavit.

Cooley, 30, was charged with capital murder.

He was also charged with aggravated robbery. According to the affidavit, Cooley told investigators that he was present during the robbery with Joles and Stanley, and he "knew facts that only someone who was there would have known."

Cooley was being held in lieu of bond in the Pulaski County jail late Thursday.

Stanley, 24, remained hospitalized at UAMS Medical Center. Charges against him are pending.

NLR woman stabbed outside apartment

A woman was stabbed multiple times outside of her North Little Rock apartment early Thursday morning, police reported.

Officers responded shortly after midnight to 2600 John Ashley Drive, Jefferson Manor Apartments. Tjuana Britt was in the parking lot bleeding from stab wounds to her head and neck, officers reported. She told police that Zaundra Owens had come to her home and attacked her outside the front door.

Owens, 40, was found inside Britt's apartment and was arrested. Britt's condition was unknown late Thursday.

Since April 1, Owens had been held at the Pulaski County jail on charges of aggravated assault on a family or household member, second-degree terroristic threatening and violation of a protection order. She posted bond Sunday and was released.

Late Thursday, she was back in jail on another charge of violation of a protection order, this time in connection with Britt's stabbing. Owens was also charged with second-degree battery in the stabbing. She was being held in lieu of bond.

The relationship between Owens and Britt was unclear.

Owens was convicted of third-degree domestic battery in 2012.

Homeless man faces 52 counts of forgery

A man who police reported is homeless was charged with 52 counts of second-degree forgery after passing phony $100 bills at a Little Rock Wal-Mart, according to an arrest report.

Police identified Christopher Mallett as a man who passed 31 of the counterfeit bills Tuesday at Wal-Mart, 700 S. Bowman Road.

On Wednesday, officers watched as Mallett returned to the Wal-Mart and attempted to pass 21 more counterfeit $100 bills, according to an arrest report. Mallett was arrested at the register.

He was additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers reported finding a white, rocklike substance and a glass pipe in Mallett's pockets.

Late Thursday, Mallet was being held in the Pulaski County jail in lieu of $75,000 bond.
