Parker, Moon win Jenkins championships

Whit Parker of Conway won the 14-year-old boys division last year at the Bruce Jenkins Memorial Junior Golf Championship and returned to win the 2014 overall title Wednesday after shooting a 2-under 70 at Rebsamen Golf Course in Little Rock.

Parker's two-day, 5-under 139 total was 5 strokes better than Maumelle's Ryan Spurlock and Little Rock's Miles Smith, who both shot even-par 144.

Boys age group winners included Trent Jones of Jonesboro (18-year old), John Counts of Oklahoma (17-year old), Spurlock (16-year old), Palmer Hays of Fayetteville (14-year old), Josh McNulty of White Hall (13-year old) and Caleb Miller of Little Rock (12-year old).

Elizabeth Moon of Forrest City won the girls championship flight after finishing fifth in last year's championship flight. Moon's 1-under 143 was eight strokes better than the 7-over 151 of Maumelle's Josie Roberson.

Lauren Loeb of Maumelle won the girls' first flight.

The tournament, originally scheduled for three days, was shortened a day after rain wiped out Monday's first round.

BASKETBALL

ASU women add assistant

Arkansas State women's basketball Coach Brian Boyer announced Friday that Aisha Stewart has been hired as an assistant coach.

Stewart spent the last six seasons at Sun Belt Conference rival South Alabama, where she served as one of the Jaguars' academic coordinators, while also preparing scouting reports and recruiting trips.

Stewart, from Topeka, Kan., also has coached at South Carolina State and Allen County (Kan.) Community College.

She replaces Shaquita Renelique, who spent last season as ASU's director of basketball operations before taking a position in ASU's academic services.

"Everyone that has worked with her has had nothing but great things to say about her," Boyer said in a news release. "My impression of her is that she is extremely organized, she has a passion for coaching, she's driven to be successful and she is a great communicator."

MOTOR SPORTS

Street stock event postponed

The National Recovery Specialist Street Stock Shootout, scheduled for Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove tonight through Saturday, has been postponed a week to June 19-21.

"We are in a no-win situation with the ground already saturated with so much rain and the forecast calling for more for the next few days, making it impossible to get the track and pit area ready," track owner Connie Starr said. "We want to do what is best for the racer by making the call early enough to save them the expense of travel and lodging."

The event will begin next Thursday with the John Few Street Stock event that was rained out in March. On June 20, the Street Stock Shootout will begin with qualifying heats. The track's IMCA Modified and hobby stock divisions also will race. On June 21, the last-chance qualifiers and the 40-lap Street Stock Shootout main event, paying $5,000 to win, will be held. The track's Superstar division also will race.

Adult general admission tickets are $12 for June 19, $10 for June 20 and $15 for June 21.
