Grassroots Caucus to host candidates

Ten candidates for governor and U.S. House and Senate seats will speak at the Delta Grassroots Caucus in Little Rock today.

Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe will also make an appearance, and former President Bill Clinton will give a presentation by live-link at the two-day event, which will focus on themes of jobs, health, women and children's issues. The conference will be held at the Clinton presidential library and starts at 4:15 p.m. today. The Friday session starts at 8 a.m.

Registration fees start at $25. The cost of attending the entire event is $125.

Caucus Director Lee Powell and Rex Nelson, president of Arkansas Independent Colleges and Universities, will ask the candidates about their positions on "key issues," and members of the audience can then ask questions, the caucus said in a news release.

Today's speakers include Beebe; U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate; former North Little Rock Mayor Patrick Henry Hays, a Democratic candidate for the 2nd Congressional District; and U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford, a Republican seeking re-election in the 1st Congressional District.

Friday's speakers include Clinton; gubernatorial Democratic candidate Mike Ross and Republican candidate Asa Hutchinson; Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor, who is seeking re-election; Heber Springs Mayor Jackie McPherson, a Democratic candidate for the 1st Congressional District; Republican French Hill, a candidate for the 2nd Congressional District; and state Rep. Bruce Westerman, a Republican candidate for the 4th Congressional District.
