Power surge helps Cubs notch 5th victory in a row

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CUBS 5, MARLINS 2

CHICAGO -- Junior Lake hit two home runs, Emilio Bonifacio added a two-run shot and the Chicago Cubs extended their winning streak to five with a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Jeff Samardzija (2-5) allowed 2 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings, striking out 8. Pedro Strop earned his second save.

Lake, who has eight home runs, had two solo shots for the second multi-home run game of his career.

Christian Yelich went 2 for 4 with a home run for the Marlins.

Randy Wolf (1-2) gave up 4 runs and 9 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Marlins struck first when Yelich homered in the third inning for a 1-0 lead.

The Cubs went in front in the bottom half of the inning when Samardzija singled and Bonifacio hammered a 3-2 pitch into the left-field bleachers for a 2-1 lead. It was Bonifacio's first home run since July 30 last season.

The Cubs stretched the lead to 3-1 in the fifth when Lake hit a long home run into the shrubbery in center field, connecting with a 79 mph change-up on a 2-1 count.

Miami pulled to within 3-2 in the sixth when Giancarlo Stanton doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Casey McGehee's groundout to first base.

The Cubs got a run back in the bottom half when Castro led off with a double, advanced to third on a flyout and scored when Wolf threw a wild pitch with Mike Olt at the plate.

Lake bumped the lead to 5-2 an inning later when he went deep for the second time in the game on a line drive to left against reliever Chris Hatcher.

BREWERS 9, PIRATES 3 Matt Garza made it through six shaky innings to win back-to-back starts for the first time since last July and Lyle Overbay hit a tie-breaking two-run single to lead visiting Milwaukee to a victory over Pittsburgh.

REDS 6, PHILLIES 5 Jay Bruce homered and drove in three runs and host Cincinnati ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over Philadelphia. Alfredo Simon (8-3) allowed 7 hits and 3 runs with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings.

ROCKIES 5, DODGERS 4 (10) Brandon Barnes hit a winning triple off the center-field wall in the 10th inning and Colorado ended an eight-game losing streak, beating visiting Los Angeles.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

TWINS 8, ASTROS 0 Rookie Danny Santana drove in five runs, Kyle Gibson pitched seven strong innings and host Minnesota beat Houston. Gibson (5-5) scattered 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5. He allowed only one runner to reach second base.

INDIANS 8, RANGERS 3 Yan Gomes and Carlos Santana homered and visiting Cleveland defeated Texas. Santana capped a four-run seventh with a two-run shot into the right-center field bullpen off Tanner Scheppers.

MARINERS 7, RAYS 4 Dustin Ackley drove in three runs, Roenis Elias won his second consecutive start, and Seattle beat host Tampa Bay. Ackley hit a three-run double off Alex Cobb (1-4) during a four-run fifth that put the Mariners ahead 7-2.

INTERLEAGUE

CARDINALS 5, BLUE JAYS 0 Shelby Miller took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and finished with a three-hit shutout as St. Louis beat host Toronto, ending the Blue Jays' six-game winning streak. Randal Grichuk hit his first career home run as the Cardinals won for only the third time in 11 games.
