It's the Broadway show that introduced the ubiquitous song "People" and launched a rising star named Barbra Streisand into the stratosphere. Now, the original Broadway production of Funny Girl is hitting its 50th birthday and Capitol Records is releasing a special and pricey commemorative set.

The funny girl in question is Fanny Brice, famous comedian, actress and singer of the early 20th century. The show's story focuses on Brice's rise to stardom, and particularly her rocky relationship with gambler Nick Arnstein.

While the show had its share of problems, and its journey to the Broadway stage was certainly not a smooth one, it was an unqualified success for Streisand, who scored one of the production's eight Tony nominations (she and the show lost to Hello, Dolly! and its star Carol Channing -- it was a tough year) and went on to tie (with Katharine Hepburn for The
