Jacksonville to get Civil War marker

Friday, June 6, 2014

Jacksonville will be the site for a new historical marker commemorating Civil War activity, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced.

The Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Marker will be located at the Bayou Meto Cemetery in Jacksonville to commemorate the recruitment of Company A, 4th Arkansas Infantry Battalion, in Pulaski County.

The Reed's Bridge Battlefield Preservation Society is the marker's sponsor.

The commission's Historical Marker Program works with local partners to tell stories of how the 1861-1865 Civil War affected communities in the state. Anyone interested in information about the program and other sesquicentennial activities can visit the commission's website at arkansascivilwar150.com.

The Bayou Meto marker brings the number of markers approved to 80 in 51 counties, according to the commission. A stated goal of the commission is to have at least one marker in each of the state's 75 counties by the end of the sesquicentennial commemoration period in 2015.
