5 Arkansas fire departments get FEMA funds

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will give $303,459 in preparedness grants to five Arkansas agencies as part of $1.3 million in total grants to four states.

This announcement comes after a devastating storm season killed 16 people in Arkansas. The aid will cover the cost of 10 power lift cots and stretchers for the Washington County Regional Ambulance Authority's Central Emergency Medical Services in Fayetteville; and firefighting gear for the Lone Rock Volunteer Fire Department in Norfork; the North Pulaski Fire Protection District 15 in Jacksonville; the Sherwood Fire Department and the city of Vilonia, FEMA said.

Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas are included in the grant, with agencies receiving $470,203, $166,588 and $390,449, respectively.

The federal grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants program, the goal of which is to make sure firefighters and emergency response teams have proper working equipment when disaster strikes. The grant has helped firefighters get critically needed equipment as well as training.
