Arkansas volunteer assistant leaving

Brad Flanders, a volunteer assistant with Arkansas’ baseball team last season, has been hired as pitching coach at Abilene Christian University.

Flanders worked with the Razorbacks’ catchers after Brian Walker left Arkansas to become the hitting coach at Wichita State.

UCA men add two players

Central Arkansas men’s Coach Ross Duncan announced the signings of midfielder/forward Pepe San Roman and forward Andre De Giorgi.

San Roman, a native of Madrid, Spain, played with Rayo Majadahonda FC. De Giorgi, from Lisbon, Portugal, has played for Sporting Club de Portugal, Estoril Praia, Belenenses and Casa Pia Atletico Clube.

Harding women second in GAC preseason poll

The Harding women’s team was picked to finish second in the Great American Conference preseason coaches’ poll.

The Lady Bisons (8-9-1 in 2013) earned 19 points and one first-place vote. Ouachita Baptist was third with 18 points and a first-place vote.

Southwestern Oklahoma State (24 points, four first-place votes) was picked to win the conference. Rounding out the poll are Southern Nazarene (13 points), East Central (Okla.) (11) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (5).

ATHLETICS

SAU Hall of Fame class announced

Southern Arkansas will induct nine members to its Sports Hall of Fame this fall.

The class is comprised of eight former SAU athletes and one coach. It includes Tony Garcia (baseball), Don Henson (football), David Kirkpatrick (baseball), Jim Leonard (football), Stephanie Manning (track and field), James Pettitt (football), Krystal Poulin (softball), Ken Schmidt (football) and former SAU volleyball coach Michelle Shoppach.

A ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center. The class also will be introduced at halftime of the Oct. 18 football game against Southern Nazarene.
