His objective was to reduce the number of department heads who reported directly to the superintendent so he could spend more time in the field, visiting and working with administrators and staff at the schools.

To make that happen, he needed more time in the day, which he'll get by having directors of maintenance, transportation and food service reporting to Kathy Hanlon, chief financial officer.

"I want to spend more time out in the district," he told the School Board during a meeting Tuesday. "I won't divest myself of running the district. I am still in charge of snow days."

He put the three directors under the the chief financial officer because much of the work of those departments is related to money.

The two associate superintendents, John L Colbert and Kim Garrett will work directly with the instructional team, namely the directors of accountability, research and assessment and curriculum and instruction, building principals and the curriculum, instruction, accountability and assessment faculty and staff.

Steve Janski, athletic director, Greg Mones, human resources director, Holly Johnson, director of development, grants and community relations and Susan Norton, director of information services, will continue to report to the superintendent, he said.

Hewitt said he also presented a book, "Turn the Ship Around" by L. Daniel Marquet, to central office staff, building principals, School Board members. The book is about leadership on a submarine which can be applied to School District leadership and management.

"We can be so overwhelmed by the organizational structures that we don't have time to step back and observe what we're doing and why," Hewitt said.

In other action, the board approved Hanlon as the district treasurer and named Glenda Sullins as the director of accounting. Sullins' appointment was included in the blanket approval of classified staff changes.

The board also approved a grant application to the Blue and You Foundation for $114,000 to extend a program started last school year building tracks at five elementary schools to promote more healthy activity among students. Tracks were built at five elementary school after the district receive grants and gifts for the project, including a $140,000 grant from the Blue and You Foundation.

Johnson said the district should hear if the grant is approved in December.

In a special presentation, the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation announced it has given the district $100,000 for immediate science and technology equipment in the last year, representing a pledge the foundation made as part of its 20th anniversary fund campaign. Cambre Horn-Brooks, executive director, and members of the foundation board were on hand for the announcement.
