Alcohol-sale backers add to county's signature tally

A group backing a measure to place alcohol sales on the November ballot in three counties turned in additional signatures late Monday to the Saline County clerk's office.

Our Community, Our Dollars -- supported by Wal-Mart, Kum & Go and other retailers -- submitted 25,917 signatures in Saline County and 20,956 in Craighead County on July 7. It is also working to collect signatures for a similar measure in Faulkner County.

Clerks in Saline and Craighead counties spent days verifying the signatures, but the group came up short in both counties. To make it on the November ballot, 38 percent of registered voters in each county need to sign the petitions.

In Saline County, the group needed 25,580 signatures to place the measure on the ballot, but the clerk's office rejected 4,406 of those submitted. On Monday, the group turned in 6,738 more signatures.

The office has five days to review the new signatures.

"We feel good about it," the group's president, Jay Allen, said Tuesday about making the ballot.

The group is focusing its efforts on collecting the 3,810 additional signatures in Craighead county, where the petition first fell short. Those are due Thursday.

The petition for Faulkner County is due Aug. 5 because efforts were delayed after an April tornado.
