Volunteers Not Needed This Week To Assemble Bikes

FAYETTEVILLE -- Volunteers assembled about 300 bicycles in two days, canceling the need for more volunteers this week, Holly Johnson, development director for the Fayetteville School District said Monday.

The Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks issued a call for volunteers to help assemble the first shipment of bicycles for a new bike education program in the school district this year.

Some 70 volunteers showed up Friday and Saturday at Vandergriff Elementary School and the ALLPS Center. They assembled about 300 bikes by noon Saturday. The bikes will be divided among the elementary schools.

Volunteers will be needed later when the next delivery of bicycles arrives for the junior highs and high school, Johnson said. The final shipment will be the bikes for the middle schools.

The district is implementing the education program to teach all students bicycle etiquette, safety and care and maintenance to encourage more students to ride to school and on the trail system in town.
