Royals rally, top Indians for 5th consecutive victory

ROYALS 7, INDIANS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Billy Butler homered for the second consecutive game and the Kansas City Royals overcame a five-run deficit to beat Cleveland 7-5 Saturday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

A day after his pinch-hit, two-run home run in the eighth inning beat Cleveland, Butler connected for a tiebreaking shot in the fifth. It was 5-all when he tagged Nick Hagadone for a drive over the Royals' bullpen in left field.

Carlos Santana hit his third home run in two games for Cleveland, which has lost six of seven.

Jeremy Guthrie (6-9) won despite giving up 5 runs on 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 2/3 innings. Greg Holland, the fourth Kansas City reliever, got his 27th save in 29 chances.

Zach McAllister (3-6) couldn't hold a 5-0 lead. He gave up a single to Salvador Perez to start the fifth and was replaced by Hagadone.

Guthrie had lost his previous three starts. He has an 8.44 ERA in three starts this season against the Indians.

The Indians scored five times in the second. Santana led off with a home run and Jason Kipnis broke an 0-for-11 rut with a two-run double.

Santana is 12 for 25 with six RBI in his last six games.

McAllister, just brought up from Class AAA Columbus after going 5-0 with a 2.23 ERA, faced 22 batters and 10 reached base. After starting the season 3-0, he is 0-6 in nine starts.

Omar Infante had an RBI grounder in the third and the Royals tied it with four more in fourth. Nori Aoki hit a two-run triple with two outs and scored on a passed ball to tie it.

BLUE JAYS 6, YANKEES 4 Dan Johnson drove in four runs with a go-ahead infield hit and a three-run home run, helping Toronto end its 17-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium with a victory over host New York.

MARINERS 4, ORIOLES 3 Chris Young allowed two hits in seven shutout innings and Seattle snapped a four-game losing streak by holding off visiting Baltimore. Dustin Ackley doubled twice and scored two runs for Seattle.

WHITE SOX 7, TWINS 0 Chris Sale tied a season high with 12 strikeouts in eight dominant innings, Alexei Ramirez hit his 10th home run, and Chicago beat host Minnesota for its third consecutive victory over the Twins.

RAYS 3, RED SOX 0 Ben Zobrist homered, Matt Joyce and Kevin Kiermaier each had an RBI single, and host Tampa Bay beat skidding Boston for its ninth consecutive victory.

ATHLETICS 5, RANGERS 1 Sonny Gray won his sixth consecutive decision, helped when visiting Oakland hit four home runs in a six-batter span to beat Texas.

ANGELS 4, TIGERS 0 Efren Navarro hit his first major league home run off Justin Verlander, and Matt Shoemaker combined with two relievers on a four-hitter as host Los Angeles beat Detroit. Shoemaker (8-3) threw just 78 pitches through seven innings, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out five.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CARDINALS 6, CUBS 3 Matt Adams drove in four runs, A.J. Pierzynski had three hits in his St. Louis debut and visiting St. Louis beat Chicago to stop a four-game skid. Shelby Miller returned to the Cardinals' rotation and pitched effectively into the sixth inning.

REDS 1, NATIONALS 0 Johnny Cueto fanned nine in seven innings and Brayan Pena singled through a drawn-in infield for the only run, leading host Cincinnati to a victory over Washington that ended a seven-game losing streak.

BREWERS 5, METS 2 Wily Peralta earned his team-leading 12th victory, and Mark Reynolds homered in Milwaukee's victory over visiting New York.

BRAVES 5, PADRES 3 Freddie Freeman had three hits and an RBI, Julio Teheran earned his 10th victory and host Atlanta took advantage of Odrisamer Despaigne's control problems to beat San Diego.

ROCKIES 8, PIRATES 1 Nolan Arenado bounced back from a benching with three hits, including a home run, and Colorado beat visiting Pittsburgh.

DIAMONDBACKS 10, PHILLIES 6 (10) Martin Prado doubled, homered and drove in five runs, including a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, to lift Arizona to a victory over host Philadelphia.

DODGERS 5, GIANTS 0 Clayton Kershaw pitched a two-hitter to win his ninth consecutive decision, leading visiting Los Angeles to a victory over San Francisco.

INTERLEAGUE

MARLINS 7, ASTROS 3 Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run double, and Jordany Valdespin added a two-run home run to power visiting Miami to a victory over Houston.
