8 historic sites under review for national listing

Two North Little Rock houses are among eight properties in Arkansas to be considered for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program's State Review Board on Aug. 6, program Director Frances McSwain announced.

The two homes, both built in 1929 in the city's Park Hill area, are the Heagler House, 904 Skyline Drive, and the Duffy House, 124 East A St.

Other properties being considered are the Redfield School Historic District at Redfield and the Carnahan House at Pine Bluff, both in Jefferson County; the Sid Hutcheson Building in Norfork in Baxter County; the U.S. 64 Horsehead Creek Bridge in Hartman in Johnson County; the Harold Adams office building in Fort Smith in Sebastian County; and Beaver Spring in Beaver in Carroll County.

The Heagler House in North Little Rock is a one-story, brick-veneer structure with dark-red brick walls and steep front-facing gables, according to the National Register nomination description. It was designed in the English Revival architectural style.

The Duffy House in an example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style of architecture, according to its nomination description. It was built by Park Hill developer Justin Matthews as part of his upscale Edgemont in Park Hill section of North Little Rock's first suburb, the description added.

The review board will meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 6 at 323 Center St. in Little Rock.

The board also plans to consider three other properties for listing on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places. They are the Palace Theater in Benton in Saline County; Fordyce's Redbug Field in Dallas County; and Langley Gymnasium in Langley in Pike County.

The Arkansas register recognizes historically noteworthy places that aren't eligible for the national register.
