• Argenta children hailed with glee the re-erection of the toboggan slide at their playground in the City park yesterday. The slide had been down for two days to allow the construction of a concrete foundation. Previously the children, as they landed, had dug deep holes in the soft earth with their heels and it was feared these holes might result in sprained ankles. The frameworks of the swings have been completed and the swings will be put in operation today. It is expected that more apparatus will be added later.

• A woman campaign worker for gubernatorial candidate Odell Dorsey showed up in front of the Democrat building during the noon hour Thursday to hand out campaign cards. She said she was not picketing the Democrat but was in front of the building "because we didn't think you knew Odell was running for governor." Dorsey charged Tuesday that the Democrat and Arkansas Gazette were not giving his campaign adequate coverage and were conducting a "conspiracy of silence" against him. The woman refused to identify herself.

• Hair spray canisters shot through the air like "little rockets" as flames engulfed two warehouses at 3117 Peyton St. early Sunday, destroying a hair products factory and three other businesses, said Capt. Harrell Davis of the Little Rock Fire Department. "It sounded like firecrackers," Davis said. "They ignited and were going all over. They were taking off like little rockets and were hitting everywhere. We were just fortunate no one was hurt." Firefighters were called to the businesses, all owned by Ernest P. Joshua, about 1:22 a.m., Davis said. Davis said the fire, which caused about $1.5 million damage, apparently started in the north warehouse.

Little Rock Monthly, which calls itself a "guide to the best of Central Arkansas," has closed, an executive with the magazine said Friday. The publication will not be printed after the August issue, said Cornelia Jackson Lea, associate publisher of Little Rock Monthly. She said she learned of the closing Thursday. The magazine is owned by New At Home Media Group Inc. and its publisher and chief executive officer, Russ McDonough. McDonough's best-known magazine was the Oxford American, which he acquired in 2002 and moved from Oxford, Miss., to Little Rock.
