Greenland Football Facility To Be Finished by Late September

GREENLAND -- Spectators at Greenland High School football games will see some improvement around the field but some of the changes probably won't be competed until the third home game, the School Board was told Tuesday.

Doug Bryant of Pick-It Construction Co. told the board a new concession stand and restrooms may not be usable by the first or second home game, scheduled Sept. 5 and 12, but spectators will see new bleachers, sidewalks, ticket booth, scoreboard and fencing as well as a new competition style track.

Bryant and Eric Pace, an architect with Key Architecture, met with the board to update the project.

The project is costing about $1.1 million and was scheduled for completion Aug. 15. That date was extended to Aug. 29 because of a delay in the bidding process but now most likely won't be finished until mid- to late-September, Bryant said. The project is being paid for with money from refinanced bonds.

He noted the construction should be complete by Sept. 26, the date of Greenland's third home football game.

The final piece of construction is the assembly of a metal building which will house the concession stands, restrooms, locker and weight rooms and coaches' office.

The metal building won't be delivered from the manufacturer until around Aug. 11 and will take a month to assemble and complete, Bryant said. Meanwhile, the construction crew is building the interior so when the building arrives, it will be put together around the interior.

In response to a question from James Miller, Bryant said the assembly of the metal exterior around the already-built interior shouldn't be a problem.

"It's not the ideal way to do it but it will fit based on the drawings. It's more difficult but not impossible," Bryant said.

Bryant said his company was forced to change manufacturers after the project started because the original manufacturer used by the company couldn't deliver the building to meet the construction time line.

Pick-It will provide portable toilets and a temporary concession stand for the first two football games since the permanent facilities won't be finished, Bryant said.

The grass field isn't involved in the improvement and won't hamper the football team from practicing or playing games, said Pat Anderson, board president.

The School Board's next meeting will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 21 in the Middle School Library at which time Bryant will again report to the board on the project's status.
