Volunteers Needed Friday, Next Week to Assemble Bikes for Fayetteville Schools

Bicycle Coalition Organizing Volunteers To Put Together 520 Bikes

FAYETTEVILLE -- Volunteers are needed this weekend and into next week to help assemble 520 bicycles for a new program in the school district.

The Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks has been working with the district to expand a bicycle safety program. The fleet will be divided among all 14 schools in the district.

The coalition has conducted the program for several years at some elementary schools. This year, it will be taught to students in all grades. The program aims to provide students adequate time to learn bike handling and safety skills to ride to school and for play and to learn about the city trail system, according to a news release from the group.

No assembly experience is necessary. The work involves everything from unpacking the bikes to tightening the bolts, according to the release. Volunteers are asked to bring bike stands and tools, if they have them. Children are welcome to volunteer.

The assembly schedule:

Friday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Vandergriff Elementary School gym

Saturday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Vandergriff Elementary School gym and ALLPS campus cafeteria
