WALKER CULP : MAUMELLE

Walker Culp left high school wishing that he could have done more, even though he accomplished plenty during his time at Maumelle.

Culp served on the National Honor Society and Beta Club. He was a school ambassador and the captain of the Hornets’ baseball team. He also was elected to serve as the president of the school’s student council.

“I did a lot of campaigning,” Culp said. “It was something I really wanted to do, but I really think we could have done more than what we did.”

Culp logged approximately 300 hours of community service. His volunteer experience includes stints with the Waner Foundation, the Dream Center, animal shelters, the Arkansas Rice Depot and Habitat for Humanity.

“My favorite was Habitat for Humanity because I felt we really helped people who were really in need,” Culp said. “We helped families who had lost their homes to tornadoes and fires. Helping them was rewarding.”

As a catcher for the Maumelle baseball team, Culp batted an impressive .440. He received offers from several Division I baseball programs, but he instead opted to play for Lyon College in Batesville, where he intends to major in biology.

“They did not put any pressure on me to go there,” Culp said of Lyon. “They were excited when they found out I was going to go there. They seemed to really care about me and what I wanted.”

Culp also played on the football, golf and wrestling teams while he attended Maumelle but concentrated on baseball his past two years at the school.

Culp said he has always shown an interest in math and science.

“There’s not much you can do with a math degree, so I decided to take the science rout,” Culp said. “After I finish at Lyon I want to attend graduate school at Washington University [in St. Louis]. Lyon has a working relationship with them. That was the deciding factor for me.”
