Men's Chorus

plans concert

The Bella Vista Men's Chorus will present its annual fall concert "Say It With Music!"at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 and at 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Bella Vista Community Church, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd.

The concert will be under the direction of Bill Hesse and accompanied by Marilyn Lee on the piano.

The concert will be a combination of secular, gospel and contemporary music. Guest artists will be Virginia Paschal on violin and Willa Avery Thomason on cello. The ArkAppella chorus, under the direction of Prudence Hagan, will also be on the program.

Tickets are $10 and can be obtained from chorus members, Bella Vista Arvest banks and at the door.

Writing School

offers seminar

The Village Writing School will offer Introduction to Screenwriting from 1 to 4 p.m. July 26. This workshop will cover the nuts and bolts of screenwriting, how the business works, what's selling in Hollywood and what's not.

Taught by award-winning screenwriter Carole Parker, the workshop will cover story structure, outlining, how to get a screenplay started and will be spiced up with insider tips.

The workshop will take place at the Village Writing School, 177 Huntsville Road in Eureka Springs. Cost for the half-day workshop is $25.

Peel Compton

hosts events

A children's writing workshop "Write On!" will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Compton Gardens and Conference Center. The free workshop is in conjunction with the Bentonville Public Library and is for students entering grades three through six. Registration: bentonvillelibrary.org.

David Raines of Raines Tree Care will present a workshop for homeowners on proper tree care, preservation and restoration from 9 a.m. to noon July 26 at the Compton Gardens and Conference Center. The workshop will be followed by a live demonstration of tree climbing. Information: [email protected].

The annual Neil Compton Celebration will be held Aug. 8 at Compton Gardens. Special guest will be Tim Ernst, Arkansas wilderness photographer. From 6 to 7 p.m. there will be an exhibit preview and meet the artist. From 7 to 8 p.m. will be the artist lecture.

Main Street

Representatives of Main Street Arkansas and the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program will speak at a public meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. on July 31 at the King Opera House at 427 Main St. in Van Buren. Main Street Arkansas is a program area of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.

The public meeting will feature information on the Main Street Arkansas downtown revitalization program and the many programs of the AHPP that can be used to preserve and enhance historic properties around the state.

Triathlon benefits

Alzheimer's work

The 2014 Memory Maker Triathlon and Aqua Bike benefiting the Alzheimer's Association will take place Aug. 23 at Bella Vista Village's Lake Windsor. The race will begin at 7:15 a.m. at London Park and then move onto the area roads around Bella Vista.

Hundreds of athletes are expected to participate in the event aimed at raising money for and awareness of Alzheimer's disease.

Racing events available are:

• A sprint distance triathlon, which includes a 500 meter swim, 15-mile bike ride and a 5 kilometer run.

• An Olympic distance triathlon, which includes a 1,500 meter swim, 24.8-mile bike ride and a 10 kilometer run.

• A sprint distance aqua bike, which includes a 500 meter swim and a 15-mile bike ride.

• An Olympic distance aqua bike, which includes a 1,500 meter swim and a 24.8-mile bike ride.

Events can be competed in individually or as teams.

Raw foods topic

at local library

The Fayetteville Public Library and Ozark Natural Foods will present an introductory workshop to raw food preparation at 3 p.m. Saturday. Ozark Natural Foods will present basic information on the raw foods movement and demonstrate recipes. No registration is required; the workshop is free and open to the public.

NTI offering

fall education

The Adult Education Center at Northwest Technical Institute in Springdale is currently offering instruction and testing in GED preparation and computers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Computer instruction (all levels) and testing for Microsoft Office specialist certifications are also available.

Fall registration will Aug. 18 for additional classes, including English as a Second Language and U.S. Citizenship. Fall classes will be offered from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the center and at other locations throughout Springdale beginning Aug. 20.

Family Literacy classes at participating Springdale Public schools will begin in September.

Meals on Wheels

seeking sponsors

Sponsor a meal for a senior citizen on Meals on Wheels for as little as $5 a day, $35 a week or $150 a month. Donations of $250 or more will be recognized with their name on the brick entryway to the Senior Activity and Wellness Center as supporters of Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels delivers meals to many seniors but now faces a moratorium in the ability to increase home delivered meals to the elderly because of lack of funding.

Masks for Change

workshop planned

The Art Experience, a nonprofit center for healing and growth through art and play, will host a two-day intensive workshop, "Masks for Change," from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 and 27. In this workshop led by licensed counselor Jo Ann Kaminsky, participants will use the metaphor of the mask to examine their lives to discover a path for change through the creative process. This workshop offers insight to change through art, sound, movement and journaling.

Cost of the workshop is $150. Art Experience is located at 641 W. Martin Luther King Blvd., Fayetteville.

Perfect Harmony

open for members

Perfect Harmony Women's Barbershop Chorus is a fun loving, energetic women's a cappella group in Bella Vista and are seeking new members to join. There are no tryouts and no previous musical experience necessary to join. Women's barbershop choruses have four sections, lead and tenor which would be for higher voices, and baritone and bass for those with lower voices.

The current chorus has about 30 active members and stays busy year-round performing for various clubs, organizations and events in Bella Vista, Bentonville and Rogers. In addition to giving free concerts, the chorus is active in supporting local charities, such as Horses for Healing, Bella Vista Animal Shelter, Bella Vista Library, Northwest Arkansas Women's Shelter as well as many other local organizations. They have two social outings during the year that include a holiday party and a summer outing.

Karen Frankenfeld, director, researches a wide variety of music that is arranged in the four-part barbershop style before selecting a song for the chorus to sing.

Rehearsals are held at 7 p.m. every Monday in the choir room of the United Lutheran Church of Bella Vista.

Bentonville High School Alumni Association announces Sweet Jam 2014, a free community concert to benefit the Alumni Association's Bentonville High School Scholarship Fund.

Local bands and musicians will perform at Blowing Springs Park, 725 RV Park Road in Bella Vista, from 2 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Performers include The Dean's List, Restless Natives, Downtown Georgia Brown, Audrey Gilbreath and Mountain Shore. Everyone is invited and there is no charge to attend. There will be drawings for door prizes. Any donations made during this event will support the scholarship fund.

Mobile Aquarium

swims up to library

A mobile aquarium from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will give patrons an up-close and personal views of native Natural State fish and turtles from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Bentonville Public Library.

Rod-and-reel combination are available for check out at the library just like a book. The loan period for fishing poles is one week. These are available in the children's department and are sponsored by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
