PERSONAL SPACE

Matthew Herren

Where I live: I live at the Reserve at Steele Crossing, an apartment complex in Johnson. I just moved here. I like apartment living. I had lived in Manhattan for 15 years and then owned houses in Kansas. I prefer a smaller space and minimal yard work. I like a small space because it forces you to keep only the things that are important to you. It's really just the essentials. I want less and less in life. I want less to carry around.

Occupation: Executive director of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas. I have been associate principal cello and I was personnel manager for the symphony, but I lived in Pittsburg, Kan., where I was teaching at a university. We present five concerts at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, and we're adding a special sixth family concert on Dec. 14 called "The Snowman." It's an animated film, and we're doing live music with it.

My favorite space: The living room.

Why? We have a vaulted ceiling. There's a lot of light. Being on the third floor, we have a view of trees. It's a space that's truly filled with the things that are most important to me, whether it's found objects, furniture found on the streets of New York or reminders of my travels.

If I could do one thing to improve this space I would: Keep it the same.
